The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is a constitutional body in India responsible for conducting direct recruitment of officers to the All-India Services and the Central Civil Services (Group A and B). Here are some key points about UPSC:

  1. Full Form: The acronym UPSC stands for Union Public Service Commission.
  2. Purpose: UPSC conducts competitive examinations to fill various civil service vacancies for the Government of India.
  3. The most well-known exam conducted by UPSC is the Civil Services Examination (CSE), popularly known as the IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS and some other service. It consists of two phases: the Prelims (objective-type questions) and the Mains (descriptive and essay-type answers).
  4. Other Exams: Besides the IAS exam, UPSC also conducts other exams, including:
    • National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination (NDA)
    • Indian Statistical Service Examination (ISS)
    • Indian Economic Service Examination (IES)
    • Indian Forest Service Examination (IFS)

History

  • The concept of a civil service exam was introduced by the British East India Company in 1854.
  • Initially, exams for the Indian Civil Service were held only in London.
  • In 1864, Shri Satyendra Nath Tagore, an Indian, became the first Indian to succeed in this exam.
  • After the Montagu Chelmsford reforms, Indian civil service exams began to be held in India.
  • The Public Service Commission was established in India for the first time on October 1, 1926.
  • With the introduction of the Constitution of India on January 26, 1950, it became the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), serving as the central commission for conducting government job examinations.

The UPSC plays a crucial role in shaping India’s administrative services and selecting competent officers to serve the Nation.
